About Fort McMurray

Fort McMurray is an exciting, growing community in northern Alberta. Though the fires of 2016 deeply affected the city, our residents are rebuilding stronger than ever. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo consists of Fort McMurray and ten surrounding communities. Fort McMurray and area sits just over 400 km northeast of Edmonton, and only 60 km west from the Saskatchewan border!

Over 70,000 people live in the city and area, and more arrive every year. For one thing, the Oil Sands provide a strong economic draw for new residents. In addition, the beautiful natural area surrounding the city attract families, outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, and skiiers. Finally, the beautiful aurora borealias, or Northern Lights, is another amazing element of the area.

Did you know that Fort McMurray is technically unincorporated? This makes it the largest unincorporated “city” in Alberta!

“Fort Mac” (as the locals call it) is home to year-round sports events, festivals, and celebrations. Plus, our community centres have activity programs for kids. We also have plenty of organized sports. From skiing in the winter to spray parks in the summer, we have something for every season. Read more on sports and recreation in our active city.

Our city is richly diverse, with residents and visitors from all over the world! We’re proud of our people and how they come together in times of need. Learn more about multiculturalism in Fort McMurray.

Fun with Family

WHY We Love YMM!

YMM is the airport code when flying into Fort McMurray. We are a strong and close knit community that stands together in times of need. Also, our community offers many benefits to residents and visitors. For example, we have a world class recreational center offering classes and activities for the whole family. We also enjoy the Snye, a beautiful park with playground, picnic area, green space, and boat launch for family gatherings of just a fun afternoon with friends. Another highlight for our community is the many local shops and boutiques we have to offer our members. There’s always something new to find and many great local shops to walk through on bright weekend mornings.

There’s always something going on in Fort McMurray, from urban markets in the bright summer sun to the many trade shows that come to MacDonald Island Park. Also, Winter Play on the Snye showcases everything there is to do in the winter. When you live in our community, you’re one of us and will always have someone to celebrate with or lean on. Fort McMurray is one big family that is always welcoming new members!

Coldwell Banker United is really a big family, and we come together and support anyone in need. We also like to be involved in the community we live and work in to make it a better place for everyone. We support many local groups such as:
