About Fort McMurray

Fort McMurray is an exciting, growing community in northern Alberta. Though the fires of 2016 deeply affected the city, our residents are rebuilding stronger than ever. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo consists of Fort McMurray and ten surrounding communities. Fort McMurray and area sits just over 400 km northeast of Edmonton, and only 60 km west from the Saskatchewan border!

Over 70,000 people live in the city and area, and more arrive every year. For one thing, the Oil Sands provide a strong economic draw for new residents. In addition, the beautiful natural area surrounding the city attract families, outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, and skiiers. Finally, the beautiful aurora borealias, or Northern Lights, is another amazing element of the area.
